Get on board the nostalgia train and take a trip back in time. Multiple-unit train 252, the only surviving representative of the first major series of electric streamliners of the Dutch Railways (NS), was brought back to life after 85 long years of neglect. On 15 May 2023 this historical gem was presented in all its glory at the restored Railway Museum in Utrecht having received a grant from Het Cultuurfonds in 2007. An homage to history, wrapped up as a superfast train!

The train’s journey from 1979 to 2002

The train’s journey from 1979 to 2002

The Stichting tot Behoud van Af te voeren Nederlands Spoorwegmaterieel (STIBANS) foundation was established in 1979 with the purpose of finding a safe home for all types of obsolete rolling stock. But multiple-unit train 252 was not yet ready to end its journey. It has had an eventful life, from its heyday in the Second World War to its travels all over the Netherlands. It seemed that this loyal companion had been forgotten until it was rediscovered by some enthusiastic hobbyists.

But the story did not end there. In 1985 NS discovered that three bogies were missing and launched a search. To their amazement, they found not just the bogies but multiple unit 252 on top of them: a bit like finding a long-lost treasure! After a few repairs and a new coat of paint, the 252 was ready to shine at the train show in Utrecht to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the railways in the Netherlands. But fate dealt a blow when the train was unable to return to its familiar shed in Roosendaal.

Thankfully the adventure took a turn. In 2002 the STIBANS foundation finally found a safe haven in Blerick, where the multiple-unit train could take shelter. This was where the process of dismantling, labelling and photographing began, resulting in a digital archive. It was also where plans for restoration were made, as the 252 was seen not just as a static museum piece but as a living and breathing symbol of the past that deserved another life.

Sound the whistle!

It might take a while but then you do get a result. It took years of toil, sweat and craftsmanship to restore the 252. Thanks to the technical knowledge and passion of a great many professionals, volunteers and stakeholders the train was restored to its former glory. From the careful painting of the exterior to the restoration of the interior, each and every step was steeped in a love of the job and respect for the past.

And then the day finally came. Multiple unit 252 is now living proof of what can be done with dedication, perseverance and a sprinkling of magic. On 15 May 2023 the Railway Museum opened its doors for this unique piece of history.
